In 2007, Bexar County launched a multi-year, $500 million flood control capital improvement program. The DeBerry Group developed communications strategy and has managed public outreach for this program since its inception, including regional and community-wide communication programs and targeted outreach for each of the more than 60 flood control projects. We developed branding, brochures, fact sheets and a website and we established an aggressive media outreach program to mark program and project milestones and communicate critical information during major rain events. We also immersed ourselves in each flood control project by identifying the stakeholders, benefits and potential problems to prepare our client to communicate with each audience.

This successful program earned Bexar County state-wide recognition and was featured in the Discovery Channel Profile Series. We’ve helped facilitate hundreds of positive media stories and organized more than 300 community meetings and public events to prepare local neighborhoods and businesses for construction.

Situation: In 2007, Bexar County launched an multi-year, $500 million flood control capital improvement program to alleviate some of the biggest flooding problems across the county. This program is one of the largest in Bexar County history and required a communications strategy to demonstrate the purpose to the community at large, and targeted community outreach for each of the more than 60 flood control projects.

Strategy: We’ve managed public outreach for this since day one. We developed branding, brochures, fact sheets and a website and we established a robust media outreach program to mark program and project milestones and communicate critical information during major rain events. We also immersed ourselves in each flood control project by identifying the stakeholders, benefits and potential problems to prepare our client to communicate with each audience.

Impact: This successful program earned Bexar County state-wide recognition and was featured in the Discovery Channel Profile Series. We’ve helped facilitate hundreds of positive media stories and organized more than 300 community meetings and public events to prepare local neighborhoods and businesses for construction. We also helped name, brand and launch the new high water alert system, HALT.
